Recommendations:

  1. Don’t forget to keep swimming trunk, water shoes, and a towel.
  2. Once the boat stops in the luminous lagoon, you’re allowed to jump into the water. Make sure you do! It’s MAGICAL!
  3. Water in the lagoon is not deep but it’s muddy. Be prepared to take care of your mud sunken swimming trunks afterwards.
  4. I highly recommend testing your camera in the night mode before you arrive there. Our photos didn’t turn out good because of messed up night mode setting.
  5. It makes sense to do Glistening Waters Luminous Lagoon excursion and Martha Brae River Rafting on a single day since both the attractions are located very close to each other in the town of Falmouth.

Getting there:

I think a private taxi is the best way to get here. There are a ton of options to choose from when it comes to taxi and tours services in Jamaica. We chose Rocky’s Taxi and Tour Services after going through all 5 star rating on their TripAdvisor page. The decision turned out to be great as they were highly dependable and responsive. We used Rocky’s taxi for our airport transfers and excursions at Blue Hole, Dunn’s River Falls, Martha Brae RiverLuminous Lagoon and Negril. Wayne, our driver made sure that we had an awesome time, and we really had a blast! Thanks Rocky’s Taxi and Wayne!

Our time there:

It won’t be unfair to say that on our Jamaica trip if I had to choose one excursion that I was most skeptical about, then it was the Glistening Waters. The reason being the extreme reviews I read online. People who liked it, liked it to the moon and back. And people who didn’t like it had lots of negative things to say. However, one thing I found common among all the negative reviews was people either didn’t see anything glistening at all or very little glistening. This being a natural phenomenon, there are so many things that could impact the ability of water to glisten and that’s what I was most skeptical about. But, all my skepticism vanished after our successful excursion. Since this phenomenon is said to only occur in only 3 places in the world, it’s definitely a must see. All you can do is drink and pray that nature behaves so that you get to see the best of it. 🙂

We did Glistening Waters Luminous Lagoon excursion after doing Martha Brae River Rafting on the same day. It makes sense to do these two attractions on the same day because they are located very close to each other in the town of Falmouth. After doing Martha Brae River Rafting excursion we had to wait for about an hour or so because it wasn’t dark enough to do the Luminous Lagoon excursion. We spent this extra time roaming around streets of Falmouth. Finally, when the time was right, we went to Glistening Waters Luminous Lagoon. We paid $25 per person in cash to get onto the boat. A non-alcoholic drink of our choice was included in the ticket. Then we hopped on a boat which took us to the lagoon. The boat ride didn’t last more than 10 mins. Once we got there, they turned off the engines, told us why the the glistening effect phenomenon occurs and asked us to touch the water. That’s when it feels MAGICAL. To see this water illuminate with movement was truly a life time experience. It was so cool and awesome that I couldn’t resist to stay on boat anymore and jumped into the water.

The moment it starts to feel magical…

Luminous Lagoon

Glistening Waters behind the boat.

Glistening Waters behind the boat!

The water is around 5 feet deep. There are life jackets available on the boat if you’re afraid of going into the waters in dark. The water is very muddy though, and you will feel several inches of mud beneath your feet while in water. But since its super dark you won’t notice the muddy water around you and won’t hate yourself for jumping in. 😉

Where did we stay in Jamaica:

We’d visited Jamaica for 5 nights and 6 days. Before getting there, I’d planned what all attractions we would cover during this trip. In a nutshell, these are the attractions we covered:

Doctor’s Cave Beach, Montego Bay

Blue Hole/Island Gully Falls, Ocho Rios

Dunn’s River Falls, Ocho Rios

Martha Brae River, Falmouth

Glistening Water Luminous Lagoon, Falmouth

Rick’s Cafe, Negril

Seven Mile Beach, Negril

From the list above, you can figure out that we’d planned to visit 4 different locations: Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Falmouth and Negril. We were flying in and out of Montego Bay airport. Since Ocho Rios and Falmouth is closer to Montego Bay as compared to Negril, we decided to stay in Montego Bay for first 3 nights. Out of these 3 days, we’d reserved one day to cover attractions in Montego Bay, and the other two days to cover attractions in Ocho Rios and Falmouth. Both Ocho Rios and Falmouth are located pretty close to Montego Bay and we’d used Rocky’s Taxi and Tour Services for the day trips there. On our forth day, we left for Negril and stayed 2 nights there.

For our 3 nights in Montego Bay, we’d stayed at El Greco Resort. Here are the reasons why we chose El Greco Resort over any other hotel in the area:

  1. We were looking for a hotel/resort with a kitchen. El Greco Resort provided just that.
  2. El Greco Resort turned out to be a good bargain. We paid $366.60 for 3 nights including taxes.
  3. El Greco Resort provided sumptuous breakfast which is included in the price.
  4. El Greco Resort is located right opposite to Doctor’s Cave Beach which is a paid beach. However, if you’re staying at El Greco Resort you get free daily passes for the beach.

Since El Greco Resort is so reasonably priced, don’t expect luxury.

For our 2 nights stay in Negril, we chose Catcha Falling Star. Here are the reasons why we chose Catcha Falling Star over any other hotel in Negril:

  1. Catcha Falling Star has a perfect 5 star rating on TripAdvisor.
  2. Catcha Falling Star is reasonably priced considering its location, reviews and service. We paid $350 (tax not included) for 2 nights in Gemini room.
  3. Catcha Falling Star is literally located right next to Ricks Cafe, one of the best places to visit in Negril.

Verdict:

I highly recommend doing the Glistening Waters Luminous Lagoon excursion because this phenomenon occurs only at select places in the world, and since you’re at one of those places already, why miss this once in a lifetime chance? 😀
